Man charged in shootout with police in Brooklyn Park
A man is facing felony assault charges after police say he opened fire on officers responding to a domestic disturbance Thursday in Brooklyn Park.
A criminal complaint states family members called 911 to report that 30-year-old Abdulwahid Hassan Hedo was threatening to burn down their home on the 8200 block of Douglas Lane North. The family alleged Hedo had made other threats and damaged the property in the past few days.
Police at the scene heard gunfire from the home, prompting them to call for backup. Officers from the Brooklyn Park Police Department SWAT Team and other agencies arrived as Hedo continued to fire shots, break windows and cause damage inside the home.
At one point, Brooklyn Park Police Officer Hassan Robertson fired his rifle, the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension revealed Friday. Robertson has been with the department for five years.
The BCA continues to investigate the incident.
A neighbor also reported to police that the gunman had fired at her as she was leaving her home.
Eventually, Hedo surrendered and was brought into custody. Police say no one was injured.
Hedo was taken to the hospital and told doctors he “felt crazy, felt like killing people, and felt like
stabbing people,” the complaint states. He said the violent urges started “when he shot at the cops.”
The complaint goes on to say Hedo told investigators he used a .40 caliber firearm, and police recovered an empty gun matching that caliber and at least five spent cartridge casings at the crime scene.
Hedo is charged with two counts of first-degree assault against a peace officer. If convicted, he faces a maximum sentence of 40 years.
He remains in custody at the Hennepin County Jail, and a judge has set his bail at $150,000. His first appearance is set for Monday afternoon.
