Police: Driver of vehicle seen near Village Hall arson identified, investigation ongoing

Maple Grove police say they’ve identified the driver of a vehicle that was spotted near the city’s historic Village Hall just before the hall was set on fire.

Police and fire crews were called to the Village Hall at around 9:12 p.m. Tuesday on a report of a fire. While firefighters were able to get the flames under control quickly, the fire still caused damage, and authorities quickly ruled it arson.

Afterward, police noticed a Chevrolet Equinox on a nearby security camera just before the fire started and asked for the public’s help to identify the driver. Friday afternoon, the department said the owner came forward voluntarily and no further information regarding the vehicle is needed.

However, investigators are still asking the public to report any information that could help them identify the persons responsible for the fire. Anyone with information can call Detective Sam Valerius at 763-494-6237, email svalerius@maplegrovemn.gov, or call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.

The investigation remains active.
