U of M names new apple ‘Triumph’

Move over, Honeycrisp.

The University of Minnesota has unveiled the name of its most recent apple variety. The apple has been called Triumph.

Triumph is a cross of the Honeycrisp and Liberty and is red with a tart flavor.

David Bedford is an apple breeder at the University of Minnesota. Bedford says creating a new apple takes three decades and is almost like hitting the lottery.

"Only one of ten thousand of the seeds the of trees we develop are good enough to make it to the market," Bedford said.

Beford says the first trees will be planted this spring and Triumph apples should be in your grocery store in the next three or four years.

"There will be a lag unfortuntely for people before can taste, but the ship has left. The process has begun, eventually there will be fruit."
