Car chase ends in Elk River with suspect shot to death; officers not believed to have fired guns

A man is dead after a chase and crash Saturday in Sherburne County in which he shot at law enforcement, according to the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension.

Officers from the Sherburne County Sheriff’s Office and Big Lake Police Department said they spotted a vehicle heading east on Highway 10 in Big Lake that was being sought in connection with a domestic shooting Saturday morning in Minneapolis.

Officers initiated a pursuit and attempted to stop the vehicle using a PIT maneuver and stop sticks. At one point during the chase, the suspect shot at squad cars, according to the BCA.

Investigators said the suspect’s vehicle eventually went off the road, crossing oncoming lanes of traffic and crashing through a barrier before coming to a stop near Proctor Avenue Northwest and Highway 10 in Elk River.

Officers found the man dead with an apparent gunshot wound. No one else was inside the vehicle, and a handgun was recovered near the body. Initial investigation shows no law enforcement officers shot their guns during the incident, according to the BCA.

The Midwest Medical Examiner’s Office will determine the cause and manner of death and will release the suspect’s identity.

The suspect in the chase was believed to be involved in a reported shootout between two men in an apartment building near South Ninth Street and LaSalle Avenue in downtown Minneapolis. The other person in that shooting was taken to the hospital and is being treated for multiple gunshot wounds.

The BCA is heading up the investigation with help from the Minnesota State Patrol.
