50-car train derails in Albert Lea; 2 cars leaking hydrochloric acid

Police say a 50-car Union Pacific train derailed Saturday afternoon in Albert Lea.

According to the Albert Lea Police Department, the train derailed after 1:30 p.m. north of the intersection of Hawthorne Street and Ulsted Avenue, near Goose Lake. A Union Pacific spokesperson said 28 cars went off the track.

No injuries have been reported.

Union Pacific confirmed that two of the cars are leaking hydrochloric acid, a highly corrosive chemical.

A precautionary shelter in place alert was initially put out for the surrounding area, and Rochester HAZMAT was sent to the scene to assist with containing materials that spilled during the crash.

The cause of the derailment is under investigation.
