Holmgren is a 7-foot center and he averaged 20.6 points, 12.6 rebounds, and 5.2 blocks per game for Minnehaha Academy and won three state championships during his high school career. He likely would’ve won a fourth if not for the pandemic canceling the state tourney in 2020.

He now joins the ranks of players like Kobe Bryant, LeBron James, Bradley Beal, Andre Wiggins, Karl-Anthony Towns, Jayson Tatum and Ben Simmons who have all previously won the award.

Holmgren’s best friend, former teammate, and projected top-five NBA Draft pick, Jalen Suggs, surprised Holmgren with the award over a Zoom conference call.

Holmgren will play for Gonzaga next season.
