Maya Moore and Jonathan Irons marry after Irons’ wrongful conviction overturned

In a ceremony over the summer, Minnesota Lynx star Maya Moore married Jonathan Irons, the man whose conviction she helped overturn.

The two made an appearance on ABC’s "Good Morning America" to announce the news.

Irons was released from prison after serving 23 years of a wrongful conviction. The 50-year prison sentence stemmed from the non-fatal shooting of a homeowner in the St. Louis area when Irons was 16.

However, a judge threw out Irons’ convictions in March, citing a series of problems with the case, including a fingerprint report that had not been turned over to Irons’ defense team, The New York Times reported at the time.

Moore, who helped lead the Lynx to four WNBA titles, put her career on hold last season to work with Irons on the case.

Moore said her connection with Irons blossomed out of a 13-year friendship that developed during Moore’s education at UConn and during the course of their work together. She said Irons told her he loved her and wanted her to marry him.

"We wanted to announce today that we are super excited to continue the work that we’ve been doing together, but doing it as a married couple," Moore said during the "Good Morning America" interview. "We’re excited to continue this new chapter of life together."
