State Boys Hockey: Warroad moves on to Class A semifinals with win over Monticello

Warroad continued its late-season surge with a 7-1 victory over Monticello in the Class A quarterfinals of the Minnesota State High School League’s Boys Hockey State Tournament on Wednesday, March 9, 2022, at the Xcel Energy Center in St. Paul.

Senior forward Damion Garder and sophomore forward Carson Pilgrim scored two goals each in powering the Warriors (25-3-1) to their ninth consecutive victory and a spot in the Class A semifinals on Friday. Warroad will face the winner of Wednesday’s second quarterfinal between Mankato East/Loyola and No. 3 Mahtomedi.
After surrendering a late first-period goal to Monticello junior forward Quintin Brooks, Warroad responded with two goals in a 26-second span to capture a 2-1 lead at the first intermission. The Warriors then scored two more goals in the third period and another three in the third period to set the score. Junior forward Jayson Shaugabay had a goal and two assists.
Monticello (13-15-1) moves to the consolation side of the Class A bracket and will play at 3M Arena at Mariucci on Thursday.
