It's been a bit of an up-and-down season for the St. Olaf's men's basketball team, but with a little over a month of the regular season left, they've likely suffered their most heartbreaking loss of the season.
Sitting at 8-8 on the season going into Wednesday night's game against Augsburg University at home in Northfield, St. Olaf was hoping to keep its momentum going and win its third straight game.
After trailing by six at the half, the Oles fell behind by as much as 17 but fought back, closing the margin to just one with about 3 minutes left in the game. With just 0.2 seconds left, the Oles still trailed by one, but that's when it looked like they might've pulled off their most memorable win of the season.
Junior guard Dominic Bledsoe lobbed an inbound pass to senior forward Troy Diggins Jr., who jumped up and batted the ball up toward the basket and in as the buzzer sounded and the crowd went wild. But, what looked like the team's most memorable win of the season quickly became the most heartbreaking.
The referees waved the score off, and Augsburg held on to win 75-74, moving their record to 12-4 on the season while the Oles fell to 8-9.
St. Olaf posted a video of the final play, which got national attention Wednesday as fans debated over whether or not the score should've counted (you can watch the video above and decide for yourself). Unfortunately, the story will remain one of what could've or should've been for the Oles.
