A three year-old girl is recovering in a Minneapolis hospital after police say she was shot over the weekend.

“She’s like so, so happy, loves playing, loves just smiling,” said Felicia Dumas, about her daughter Olivia that was wounded.

The family said they were at home Saturday night when gunfire erupted outside their Minneapolis residence in the 2200 block of 5th Avenue North.

“My first instinct was to grab her and hit the floor–that was my only instinct at the time,” Dumas said.

Pictures of the bullet holes shared by the family with 5 EYEWITNESS NEWS show damage to the front door, the siding of the family’s home, and inside the bedroom where Olivia was sleeping next to her mother.

“It’s been terrible, sad, and stressful to watch her in pain, so it’s real bad,” said Alex Walker, Olivia’s father who has been with her at the hospital.

Olivia underwent surgery for the wound on the side of her head and ear.

Few details have been shared by Minneapolis police about the shooting.

The department said officers from the 4th precinct responded to a call about shots being fired outside around 10 p.m.

Homicide detectives came to investigate, because at first they weren’t sure about the extent of Olivia’s injuries, but it was later determined the wound was non-life threatening, according to the department.

An MPD spokesman said no arrests had been made in the case.

“Whenever this happens it takes me back,” said KG Wilson.

The long-time community activist’s granddaughter Aniya Allen was fatally shot last year in North Minneapolis.

Since then Wilson’s worked to raise awareness about unsolved cases in the Twin Cities, including Aniya’s.

“I’m still furious, angry and hurt and heartbroken about my granddaughter, and there’s no justice,” Wilson said.

Wilson went to visit Olivia and her family in the hospital earlier in the week.

“They gave me strength, the little girl gave me strength, she gave me hope,” Wilson said.

‘Hope’ that the person who shot Olivia is caught, and also the killer who took Aniya is as well, Wilson said.

At the end of the week, Olivia’s parents hope she’ll be released from the hospital.

“Bring her home, and hopefully relocate from where we are living, that would be good too,” said Walker.
