State program to see increase in cash assistance to low-income families

The Minnesota Family Investment Program, a program that helps families experiencing poverty, will see an increase in funding for the first time in 34 years. 

According to the Department of Human Services (DHS), the MFIP provides temporary income support and employment services for low-income families with children. 

The increase was approved during the 2019 Minnesota legislative session. This means families part of the program will see an increase in their cash assistance.

DHS reports an MFIP serves more than 29,000 families a month. More than 50% of the families that access MFIP are able to leave the program in less than a year.
