St. Paul police searching for suspect after fatal shooting

Police in St. Paul are investigating a fatal shooting that occurred Tuesday afternoon.

The St. Paul Police Department said the shooting occurred just after 4 p.m. near the intersection of University Avenue West and Arundel Street.

According to St. Paul police, officers were patrolling the area of University Avenue and Arundel Street when they heard gunfire. The officers quickly reported the incident and began searching the area. They found an adult man with a gunshot wound to his chest lying in the middle of  Arundel Street by a corner grocery store across from the Green Line.

Officers rendered aid to the victim, and he was then transported to Regions Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. 

No arrest has been made in this case. This incident is not believed to be random, according to the St. Paul police.

A gun was recovered behind a nearby building in the snow.  Investigators collected evidence for hours, including shell casings and surveillance footage, and interviewed witnesses. K9s also canvassed the area.

This shooting marks the third homicide of 2020 in St. Paul. There have also been nine victims injured by gunfire and 64 reports of shots fired in St. Paul since Jan. 1.

"Unfortunately we are setting a pace that is disappointing, and we are doing everything to disrupt that," St. Paul police spokesman Steve Linders said.
