St. Paul Police: Homicide victim badly burned, suspect in custody

Police are investigating a homicide in St. Paul.

According to St. Paul Police, officers were called to the 1700 block of Wynne Avenue shortly before 9 a.m. Tuesday after someone reported a woman on fire in a warehouse.

When officers arrived, they found a woman in her 40s unresponsive, not breathing with apparent bad burns. Medics pronounced her dead at the scene.

“Calls like these are absolutely shocking and devastating … I don’t have the words for this,” St. Paul Police Sgt. Natalie Davis said Tuesday afternoon. You can watch the full news conference below.

Police said investigators quickly identified a person who’d been in a previous relationship with the victim as a suspect. That person — identified by police as 47-year-old Patrick Morris Simmons — was later arrested by Bloomington police a short distance from his home, which was on fire along the 5000 block of Nine Mile Creek Circle, according to the Bloomington Fire Department.

The suspect will be booked at the Ramsey County jail on probable cause murder, police said.

It’s the 11th homicide of the year in St. Paul.

The investigation remains active, and several witnesses were interviewed by police.
