Robbery suspect fatally shot while charging Rochester police officer with ax
A man was fatally shot after charging at an officer with an ax when he was stopped in connection to a robbery, the Rochester Police Department says.
Just before 11 p.m. Friday night, Rochester police responded to a robbery at a business on the 2000 block of Broadway Avenue South.
A man “entered the business with an ax, took cash and fled in a van,” police report.
Police found the van on Highway 63 and made a traffic stop. Initial information says the suspect left his vehicle and charged at an officer with an ax.
The officer then shot the suspect, the report details.
Despite life-saving efforts, the man died from his injuries.
The deceased has not yet been identified.
The Bureau of Criminal Apprehension is solely investigating.
The City of Rochester says the BCA investigation is standard, and that the officer who was involved has been with the police department for over a year.
