It’s a day loved ones of George Floyd knew was coming — when ex-Minneapolis police officer J. Alexander Keung would be released.

Keung — who was one of the four officers convicted in connection to the death of Floyd — was released from federal prison Wednesday.

It was back in 2022 when Courteney Ross spoke at Kueng’s sentencing hearing. Floyd was her boyfriend of several years.

“When I spoke to Kueng during my victim impact statement, I told him that he did the wrong thing and, hopefully, this time in jail and prison will help him do the right thing when he gets out when he needs to stand up for people,” said Ross.

In the years since Ross told 5 EYEWITNESS NEWS that she hopes Kueng listened to her message.

“Sometimes it feels like it’s been 20 years and sometimes it feels like it was yesterday,” said Ross.

On Tuesday, the Federal Bureau of Prisons confirmed to 5 EYEWITNESS NEWS that J. Alexander Kueng was scheduled to be released Wednesday from FCI Elkton, a low-security federal correctional institution in Ohio.

Kueng was sentenced at the state level with three and a half years of prison time after pleading guilty to aiding and abetting second-degree manslaughter, receiving credit for time served.

The sentence was to be served congruently with his three-year federal sentence after Kueng was charged with violating Floyd’s rights and willfully failing to try to stop former Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin from using unreasonable force on Floyd.

He will be under supervision in both his state and federal cases.

Ross has become active in the community since advocating for social justice.

“At least in my communities, it has made us stronger, it has made us more resilient than ever, and it’s made us closer,” said Ross.
