Seniors are being hit particularly hard by inflation.
Price hikes on housing, food, and gas have taken a toll for those on a fixed income.
In the last few months Sara Roberts, a social worker with Senior Community Services has been getting more calls for help.
“We’ve been getting quite a few calls from seniors afraid of they’re not going to be able to pay their rent and looking for low income housing or help with paying their rent,” Roberts said.
For the first time the Gillespie Center in Mound is setting up a food shelf for seniors. Next year, those on Social Security will receive an annual cost-of-living adjustment of 8.7%, the largest increase in more than four decades, but for now many seniors are feeling little relief.
