Hennepin, Ramsey and Washington County attorney’s offices launch new expungement tool

The attorney’s offices for Hennepin, Ramsey and Washington Counties as well as the state Attorney General’s Office have announced they are launching a new tool to help ensure residents have equal access to the systems available to seal their criminal records.

According to a release from the Hennepin County Attorney’s Office, the Hennepin, Ramsey and Washington County Attornies are launching a new online expungement application program.

The tool will allow those with criminal convictions who have completed their sentences to have equal access to systems available to seal their criminal records.

"We’re excited to partner with Ramsey and Washington County on this expungement initiative," Hennepin County Attorney Mike Freeman said. "It’s unique and transformative in how we approach those who have been through the criminal justice system."

Sealing criminal records can make it easier for people to find employment and housing and it increases access to education, according to the release.

"Prosecutors are ministers of justice. Our job isn’t just to win convictions, it’s to ensure that justice is done," Attorney General Keith Ellison said. "For too long, Minnesotans in most parts of our state who have already paid the price for their offense have continued to pay an unfair price. Their criminal record continues to haunt them when they apply for jobs, credit, education, housing, or other essential services. That doesn’t just hold them back, it holds everyone back. It’s unfair to everyone in society when some people are unfairly kept from contributing to their fullest desire and ability."
