Brooklyn Park school locked down during nearby police search, standoff

An elementary school in Brooklyn Park was placed on lockdown Wednesday afternoon due to nearby police activity.

According to Brooklyn Park Police, officers and SWAT members were searching for an older, armed man wearing a camouflaged jacket in the 7200 block of Idaho Avenue, not far from Park Brook Elementary School, shortly after 2 p.m.

At around 2:30 p.m., police said the man was found barricaded in a residential home and negotiators were called to talk with him.

The public is urged to avoid the area but a shelter-in-place order has been lifted, police said. However, a large police presence is expected to remain in the area for the foreseeable future.
