Charges against UnitedHealthcare suspect

A man arrested outside the UnitedHealthcare campus in Minnetonka on Monday has been charged.

26-year-old Ian Wagner faces two counts of illegal firearm possession and two counts of threats of violence.

This comes about four months after the company’s CEO, Brian Thompson, was gunned down in Manhattan. Barriers have been up at the campus since then, and a source tells 5 EYEWITNESS NEWS they worked as they were intended on Monday.

According to charging documents, the FBI contacted Minnetonka police just before 11 a.m. on Monday and said a suspect was threatening to “shoot up” the UnitedHealthcare campus. He identified himself as Ian Wagner and said he was parked in a corporate parking lot with a loaded firearm.

Wagner’s family says he planned to shoot through the doors of the company. His mother, Cheryl Wagner, told 5 EYEWITNESS NEWS that her son has mental health issues, and he didn’t have a claim denied by UnitedHealthcare. However, she says he wanted to send a message to the judicial system but didn’t intend to hurt anyone.

The recorded 911 call revealed that Wagner told a dispatcher he would fire into the building if criminal charges against him weren’t dropped.

Records show Wagner has two outstanding arrest warrants — one for violating probation following a conviction of making threats. There are also multiple restraining orders filed against him.

The FBI was called in to help negotiate with Wagner, and eight nearby buildings were advised to go into lockdown. He eventually surrendered without incident.

A .38 caliber revolver was found in the vehicle with five rounds of live ammunition in the clinder. Investigators also found a baggie containing 16 additional rounds.

Charges against UnitedHealthcare Suspect, suspect had multiple warrants and restraining orders

The Hennepin County sheriff said they tried multiple times to arrest Wagner on a warrant — details of those attempts haven’t been shared.

Court records indicated that Wagner had multiple open warrants for his arrest. Records indicate that one of the warrants in Hennepin County had been active for about 11 days.

Wagner had also been on home electronic monitoring as of March 10, as part of his sentencing in two previous felony cases.

Hennepin County officials told 5 EYEWITNESS NEWS that details about Wagner’s monitoring are not public data.

The tracking machine only indicates if someone is home or not but does not provide a precise GPS location on the individual, according to the county.
