3-year-old killed in shooting inside home, unknown how, Minneapolis police say

3-year-old dies after being shot in Minneapolis

Minneapolis police are investigating a case involving a three-year-old boy who was shot and killed Monday afternoon.

First responders were called to an apartment complex on the 2300 block of Jefferson Street Northeast around 12:45 pm. Police say the call came from an adult who was inside the apartment unit with the child, reporting he had been shot.

First responders rendered medical aid and transported him to the hospital, where he died from his injuries.

Police say they are still trying to determine if the shooting was an accident or not. Gaiters said that they are looking for help from the public to find any witnesses.

“No one is under arrest.  We are still trying to figure out what happened and why.  As a police department, we stand by this family. This is a very serious incident, and a child lost their life today,” said Minneapolis Police Assistant Chief Christopher Gaiters.

Gaiters said it’s unclear right now how many shots were fired or what type of gun it was. He said an adult was present at the home when the incident happened but was unable to say if it was the child’s primary home.

“My thoughts are with the family of this little boy; they have experienced an unimaginable tragedy,” O’Hara said. “The death of a young child has such a profound impact on both the child’s immediate family and the first responders who tried so hard to save a life. As we conduct our investigation, I ask for compassion for all those whose lives have been forever altered today.”
