1 arrested after officer, suspect exchange fire near Lake Harriet
An investigation is underway Wednesday morning in Minneapolis after shots were fired overnight at Lake Harriet’s boat launch on East Harriet Parkway.
The Minneapolis Park and Recreation Board (MPRB) says a Park Police officer was investigating a suspicious vehicle that was illegally parked and blocking access to the Lake Harriet boat launch at around 11:55 p.m. Tuesday when a man who claimed to own the vehicle came up to the officer.
MPRB says the man was uncooperative and combative with the officer and, at one point, fired shots in the officer’s direction. The officer returned fire but neither the suspect nor the officer was hurt, although the officer’s squad car had some damage.
Authorities say the suspect then ran off and the officer called for help in finding him. Officers from both Park Police and Minneapolis Police responded and helped find and arrest the man a short distance away.
The man hasn’t yet been publicly identified by MPRB says he’s 24 years old.
The board also says the officer involved in the incident did have a body camera on and it was active. Minneapolis police are investigating at the request of Park Police.
