Twin Cities Marathon plans return to normal in 2022
Organizers for the 40th anniversary Twin Cities Marathon are planning for a return to normal in 2022.
After the event was canceled in 2020 and capacity was limited last year, Twin Cities in Motion says the race route will start in downtown Minneapolis and run to the State Capitol in St. Paul when the event returns to full scale this fall.
Registration for the marathon and weekend events will open at 10 a.m. Thursday. Twin Cities Marathon Weekend is set for Sept. 30 through Oct. 2.
“We’re excited to be launching the anniversary event,” Twin Cities In Motion Executive Director Virginia Brophy Achman said in a statement. “We are eager to celebrate an important milestone for the marathon and the Minnesota running community. We have been looking forward to this anniversary for a long time and are excited to be able to celebrate it in a big way this year.”
Fewer than 4,500 marathoners were allowed to participate in the 2021 race due to COVID-19 safety measures. This year, organizers are preparing for more than 30,000 runners, including a sellout field of 8,500 marathon runners.
Twin Cities in Motion is also planning for a new Diane & Alan Page Community Cheer Challenge, live art experiences, hundreds of youth runners, and set a goal of raising $1.4 million to benefit dozens of nonprofits.
