SNAP eligibility expands Thursday in Minnesota

More Minnesotans struggling to afford groceries will soon be able to receive help.

Eligibility for the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) is expanding on Sept. 1, and officials believe around 1,400 Minnesota households will be able to get help from the program.

SNAP’s gross income limit will increase Thursday from 165% of the federal poverty line to 200%, meaning a family of three with an annual income of up to around $46,000 (before taxes) will now be eligible.

“This change will help more Minnesotans feed their families,” Minnesota Human Services Commissioner Jodi Harpstead said. “Rising food costs can quickly wipe out any increase in income, but we can help offset that with more support for individuals and families who continue to face food insecurity.”

The change was approved by the Minnesota Legislature in the 2022 session. It’s the second time lawmakers have increased SNAP’s gross income limit, with the other being in 2010.
