UPDATE 8/2/22 – The Prior Lake City Council has approved a temporary ban on the sale of THC edibles within city limits.

The approval happened during Monday’s meeting, where councilors voted unanimously on the item.

The vote came after state lawmakers approved a massive bill in May that included legalizing THC edibles.

“If we’re going to treat it like alcohol or tobacco, it would require a business to get a license from the city, they would be subject to background checks, they would be subject to random inspections to make sure they’re not selling to minors,” said Jason Wedel, the City Manager of Prior Lake. “None of those protections today are in place.”

The Prior Lake ordinance puts in a moratorium that could last up to a year.

Officials say if they work through licensing and other police issues, it could be ended sooner.

INITIAL REPORT 8/1/22 – Prior Lake could become the latest city to issue a temporary ban on the sale of THC products.

The Prior Lake City Council is expected to take up the ordinance during a meeting Monday evening.

Several other cities have decided to put a moratorium in place on the sales after the sudden legalization of THC-infused products last month.
