Minneapolis teen sentenced for deadly October shootout involving rival gang member

A Minneapolis teenager has been sentenced for killing a rival gang member in a shootout in October.

Court records show 18-year-old Mahad Jama Ali was sentenced last week to over 16 years (198 months) at the St. Cloud Correctional Facility, and given credit for 227 days served. He had amended his plea to guilty on one count of second-degree murder back in April.

According to the criminal complaint, police were called to the area of 23rd Street and Aldrich Avenue North just before 6:30 p.m. on Oct. 11 on a report of gunshots. Officers pulled over a Chevrolet Impala after learning a victim suffering from a gunshot wound was in the vehicle, and then rendered first aid to the victim. However, the victim was pronounced dead at the scene. He was identified as 25-year-old Mustafa Ali, a "high-ranking member" of a local gang, according to authorities.

The complaint said officers noticed a vehicle that appeared to be following the Impala later arrived at Hennepin County Medical Center, and the two men in the vehicle were identified by police as members of a gang that had a rivalry with the victim. Not long after the men arrived at the hospital, a vehicle carrying Mahad Ali, arrived. Ali was suffering from a gunshot wound and needed emergency surgery.

Interviews and surveillance video showed police that Mahad Ali was in the back seat of a vehicle when Mustafa Ali walked up to the door and the two began to shoot at each other.
