A criminal complaint states the Grant County Sheriff’s Office was called to Ashby just before 8:40 a.m. on Dec. 2, 2020, on a report of a suspicious person. The caller told the sheriff his friend, later identified as Morales, was acting strange and said he’d burned an apartment building.

When Morales opened his apartment door, the sheriff saw smoke pouring out, the complaint states. The body of Morales’s girlfriend was later found inside with apparent injuries from an assault.
