Juvenile on bicycle struck and killed by truck in Cedar Lake Township
A juvenile who was riding a bicycle died after being struck by a pickup truck Friday night.
The Scott County Sheriff’s Office said in a news release that dispatch got a report of an unresponsive bicyclist at the intersection of Zachary Avenue and 260th Street East in Cedar Lake Township around 7:14 p.m.
Police and firefighters arrived and found that the juvenile was dead.
A 72-year-old man at the scene said that he struck the victim with his truck. According to the release, the man said he was driving east on 260th Street East when he left the roadway and struck the victim. Deputies noted heavy front-end damage to the 2003 GMC truck.
A field sobriety test was taken after deputies noticed an odor of alcohol coming from the man. He was then arrested and placed under arrest and taken to Scott County Jail on suspicion of criminal vehicular homicide. He has not yet been charged.
The victim’s name and age will be released by the Hennepin Count Medical Examiner’s Office.
The incident is being investigated by the Scott County Sheriff’s Office and the Minnesota State Patrol.
Scott County Sheriff Luke Hennen said in the news release “Our hearts are broken for a family who lost their child yesterday. This is a tragic reminder that it is never ok to drink and drive.”
