Deputy involved in fatal Backus shooting identified

The Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension on Thursday identified the Cass County Sheriff's deputy who fatally shot a man in Backus Sunday.

According to the BCA, Deputy Mike Germain, a seven-year veteran of the department, fatally shot 57-year-old Keith Haux. Germain is on standard administrative leave.

The Cass County Sheriff's Office said deputies were called about an intruder in a home in Backus and a possible shot fired at about 1:38 p.m. Sunday. When deputies responded, they encountered Haux armed with a gun on a residential street.

The sheriff's office said Haux was given multiple commands before he was fatally shot.

Authorities then found 72-year-old Maynard Anderson dead in the home they were initially called to.

The BCA is investigating the shooting.
