Charges won't be filed in Bloomington light rail stabbing, attorney's office says

Hennepin County Attorney Mike Freeman announced Friday that no charges will be filed in the stabbing that left one man dead on a light rail train in Bloomington this week.

The attorney's office issued the following statement on the case:

"After reviewing the case, the Hennepin County Attorney's Office will not be filing charges in the Bloomington light rail stabbing that occurred Jan. 23 as we would be unable to disprove a claim of self-defense."

The Hennepin County Medical Examiner's Office said 45-year-old Anthony Demetrius Watson, of Minneapolis, died of multiple sharp force injuries and officially ruled his death a homicide.

Victim of fatal stabbing on light rail train identified

According to Metro Transit Spokesperson Howie Padilla, authorities received a report of an assault at about 1 a.m.

Two men allegedly engaged in a verbal altercation that turned physical, Padilla said. One of the men stabbed the other.

The train stopped at the 28th Avenue Station in Bloomington, and Watson was transported to Hennepin County Medical Center, where he later died.
