Around 3:00 p.m. Monday, Mendota Heights police were dispatched to a possible burglary-in-progress and vehicle theft, the Dakota County Attorney’s Office said.

Police say the stolen vehicle was a Tesla Model X, and the suspects were traveling in a blue Hyundai at the time of the vehicle theft. An officer located the suspected blue Hyundai and attempted a traffic stop, at which point a high-speed chase ensued.

The news release notes that the vehicle tried to exit onto Highway 13, but it started emitting smoke from the engine. The suspects fled on foot and were later apprehended.

A total of five juveniles were detained, but Mendota Heights police released three of them to their parents. Because the ages of the juveniles range from 14 to 17 years old, their names have not been released.

Police say they learned the Hyundai had been reported stolen out of St. Paul. The stolen Tesla was later found abandoned.

The two juveniles facing felony charges have an upcoming court date on Mar. 28, 2022.
