2 hospitalized, including deputy, after snowmobile falls through ice in Barron County
Two people were hospitalized Saturday after a snowmobile fell through the ice and into a lake in western Wisconsin.
The Barron County Sheriff’s Department says it received a 911 call reporting someone had fallen through the ice on Prairie Lake, near Wolf’s Den Resort, at around 12:05 a.m. Deputies, along with Chetek and Cameron fire and rescue crews, responded and made their way onto the ice.
After finding the person, deputies tried to rescue him but the ice gave way, sending both deputies into the water.
The sheriff’s department says one deputy was able to hang on to the subject and help him stay afloat until fire crews and several citizens were able to help them to safety.
One of the deputies and the subject were taken to a hospital for treatment. The other deputy suffered a minor injury but remained at the scene to help.
According to the department, the subject remained in serious but stable condition on Sunday. The deputy was released from the hospital and is now recovering at home.
The department also thanked everyone who helped at the scene.
