16-year-old boy dies after falling through ice in Woodbury
A 16-year-old boy who was pulled from a freezing Woodbury lake earlier this week has died, according to the Hennepin County Medical Examiner’s Office.
The boy, Yahye Abdi, was an 11th grade student at Stillwater Area High School.
Carissa Keister, a spokeswoman for Stillwater Area Public Schools, said the high school has had district staff and counselors on hand to help students this week and moving forward.
Woodbury police say Abdi fell through the ice on Markgrafs Lake around 4:30 p.m. Monday. People had gone out onto the lake to save him, and a 12-year-old girl also fell through the ice in the process.
Emergency responders pulled the girl from the water first. Abdi was submerged beneath the water and ice, and a dive team had to go in the lake to recover him, police said. Both were taken to the hospital for treatment.
Abdi died Thursday morning at a hospital in Minneapolis, according to a report from the Hennepin County Medical Examiner’s Office. His death was said to be an accidental freshwater drowning.
The girl was last reported to be in stable condition.
