UPDATE 6/17 at 3 p.m.: The Ramsey County Medical Examiner’s Office identified the victim in the shooting as 21-year-old Saw Da Por, of Roseville.

St. Paul police are investigating a homicide on the city’s east side.

According to police, a person in their 20s was fatally shot overnight on the 800 block of Maryland Avenue East.

Police conducted a search of the area for possible suspects, but were unable to locate any, and no arrests had been made early Wednesday morning. Police were able to secure the shooting scene and canvas the area for evidence and witnesses and are still looking for evidence of what happened Tuesday night.

“It’s a scary time for our city,” Tyrone Terrill, Ramsey County Intervention Team, said.

When the temps get warmer, Terrill’s mission to help at-risk youth becomes more critical.

The community activist works with youth from ages 10-17 by targeting behavior like anger and trauma before it snowballs into violence.

“People just don’t wake up in the morning and say, ‘I’m going to pick up a gun and kill somebody,’” Terrill said.

He said it’s behavior the city of St. Paul is seeing too often.

“Most of these homicides that we have are planned. They’re looking for that individual and that’s who they intended to shoot,” Terrill said.

Earlier this week, another St. Paul shooting left a man with a gunshot wound.

“It’s concerning any time someone in our community picks up a gun to settle their differences,” Sgt. Mike Ernster, St. Paul police spokesperson, said.

Ernster calls these cases complex.

He noted the amount of shots being fired at these scenes is concerning.

“It’s scary, extremely dangerous,” Terrill added.

Terrill mentioned targeting kids before the age of 10 could stop thoughts of violence before they become second nature.

“If we allow that young child to grow up in an environment of poverty, no culture, no religion, no spirituality, mental illness and trauma that goes with it, you have more violent youth coming,” he said.

On Wednesday Morning, St. Paul Police held a press conference to discuss the situation, which you can watch HERE or in the video above.
