An 11-year-old is critically injured and two people are in custody after a shooting on Friday night in St. Paul.

A spokesperson for the St. Paul Police Department (SPPD) said officers were called to the 800 block of Pierce Butler Route just before 9 p.m. on a report of a person shot inside an apartment.

Law enforcement found an 11-year-old boy, who was brought to Regions Hospital for a life-threatening gunshot wound to the head.

As of 2 p.m. on Saturday, the boy was still in critical condition.

A 13-year-old girl was determined to be a potential suspect, and a search ensued on Friday. Officers later found her on the 100 block of Charles Avenue and took her into custody, according to SPPD.

Authorities said it is expected she will be brought to the Ramsey County Juvenile Detention Center on suspicion of second-degree assault.

Authorities say a 34-year-old man was also taken into custody on Saturday afternoon after officers recovered two guns in the apartment. Martinez Castillo Lloyd, of St. Paul, was booked in the Ramsey County Jail on suspicion of felony possession of a firearm by an ineligible person and negligent storage of a firearm.

Lisa Wheeler said she was in her apartment right across the hall when it all unfolded.

“There were a lot of kids around, at least eight, eight to 10 kids probably,” she said, adding that she was used to the commotion and kids running around, but nothing could’ve prepared her for seeing a young boy lying on the floor as police lights pulled up.

“Yeah, it was bad. I’ve never seen anything like that in my life, and I’ve seen a lot of stuff,” Wheeler said. “I’m sick today. I’m sad, I’m sick. I’m praying. I want everybody to pray for that kid. I just want him to come out and come home.”

St. Paul faith leader Bishop Harding Smith, in an interview on Saturday, said he didn’t know the 13-year-old suspect or 11-year-old victim in this case, but he says he’s known too many others.

“Right now our kids, instead of sitting down deciding what college they should be going to, we’re deciding what funeral home we’re taking our young. This is devastating, and it’s devastating the community,” he said.

That’s why he was spending some of his busy Easter weekend trying to reach the kids in his community before it was too late.

“You know, people think when you take a life, you go to jail. That’s it. But there are worse things than that…Watching someone die, seeing them die, that’s something that plays back in your mind over and over and over again. So I say to the kids, to the youth, ‘Focus on your future, see what your future has to offer,'” Smith said.

He said he’s praying for the young victim and suspect in this case, as well as their families.

“We’re putting our arms around both families because this is really tragic,” he continued.

Police couldn’t say at this point whether they believe the shooting was intentional or accidental.

Any official charges against either suspect would come from the Ramsey County Attorney’s office.

Investigators are working to determine the circumstances of the shooting.
