The new superintendent for Minneapolis Public Schools (MPS) addressed community members and the media on Friday morning.

MPS Superintendent Dr. Lisa Sayles-Adams introduced herself, discussed her first week on the job and her passion for MPS, and answered questions during the 10 a.m. press conference at The Davis Center.

Although Sayles-Adams is taking over at a tough time amid contract negotiations with the teacher’s union, she said Friday it was good to be back working in Minneapolis.

During her first week, Sayles-Adams met with students, principals, teachers and staff, and visited Nellie Stone Johnson School – where she taught years ago – and even ran into a few teachers she knew.

In addition, Sayles-Adams said she plans to be out in the community talking to people, as well as holding both in-person and virtual listening session for parents.

The Minneapolis Federation of Teachers says in addition to contract talks, she has big jobs ahead of her that need attention, which include declining enrollment, staffing shortages, district spending and decisions about either closing or consolidating some schools.

Sayles-Adams also has meetings coming up with staff to learn more about where things are at and where to go from here.
