Two of the seven people hospitalized after a fire early Wednesday morning in St. Paul have died, family members confirmed Friday.

The fire, which was reported around 1:30 a.m. at a home on Arkwright Street near Hawthorne Avenue, left six children and one adult in critical condition.

St. Paul Deputy Fire Chief Roy Mokosso confirmed to 5 EYEWITNESS NEWS that a child died on Thursday. On Friday, family members confirmed a boy had also died.

A GoFundMe has been started to help the family.

Pa Cheng Vang, the father whose wife and six children were hospitalized, has been posting updates to the page. He said Thursday that the child who died was his oldest daughter, and three of his other children are at high risk of heart failure and brain death because of smoke inhalation. His wife was also at risk of not recovering.

There was a spot of good news, however: Two of the children have improved from being in critical condition.

Vang said he learned about the fire from police while he was at work.

The family released the following statement via Regions Hospital on Wednesday:

“Our family experienced a devastating fire Wednesday morning at our home. We want to thank the St. Paul Fire Department and other first responders for their selfless and brave efforts. Out of respect for our family’s privacy, no additional information will be provided at this time.”

The official cause of the fire has not yet been released but investigators say it is not considered suspicious.
