Police are investigating an incident where multiple gunshots hit a day care center in Minneapolis while kids were meeting Santa on Tuesday evening. No injuries were reported.

According to Minneapolis Police Chief Brian O’Hara, at around 5:15 p.m., officers with MPD and the Hennepin County Sheriff’s Office heard seven shots fired in the area of 34th Avenue North and Penn Avenue North.

Police canvassed the area and shortly after arrested a man for weapons violations after he was found with a gun.

O’Hara said that officers later found discharged casings in an alleyway near 33rd Avenue North and Penn Avenue North. Police then discovered that at least two rounds struck a daycare nearby, shattering one window and damaging another.

Children had been in the room immediately before the gunfire damaged the building but nobody was in the room when the gunfire hit, according to O’Hara. He stated, however, that there were children in the daycare at the time of the incident meeting Santa.

The daycare was identified as New Horizon Academy. Leaders at the childcare center and school issued the following statement to 5 EYEWITNESS NEWS late Wednesday morning:

“At around 5:00 p.m. an isolated incident occurred in our community that impacted our school. There was stray gunfire that led to shattered windows in one of our preschool classrooms on the second floor of our building. There were no children or staff in the classroom at the time of the incident. Fortunately, no one was hurt. Our director immediately alerted authorities. Today, children are safely participating in daily learning activities with their early childhood educators.

The safety and security of the children in our care and our early childhood educators is our utmost priority. We use the latest in security monitoring technology, including video surveillance of the property and classrooms and secured entrances.”

Police believe there is one other suspect at large with at least one other weapon that was not recovered from the scene.
