Authorities say a man charged in an armed break-in Wednesday is now suspected in a nearby homicide.

Tevon Antowon King, 27, has been charged with two counts of first-degree burglary. Police said that charges in the homicide are expected to be released Friday.

Shortly after midnight on Wednesday, officers were called to the 1200 block of White Bear Avenue on a report of shots fired. Other callers said that a man broke into a home on the 1100 block of White Bear Avenue and was holding the residents hostage, according to the criminal complaint.

Officers and the SWAT team were able to get five people out of the home, but others were still inside, court documents said.

A man who was inside the house told officers that he was asleep when one of his sons woke him up and said someone was trying to open their back door. He told his son to turn off the lights and went to the kitchen. He then heard gunshots and saw someone kick the door in, according to the criminal complaint. He ran out the front door to a nearby gas station.

Another witness told police they awoke to banging at the door. They saw a man, later identified as King, standing at the back door and told him to get out of the house.

The witness saw that King had a gun and tried to block the door with a treadmill before going to hide in the basement bathroom and calling 911. King tried to open the bathroom door a few times, saying, “I only have one round left in my gun. I am going to kill you.” He also racked his gun a few times while walking around the basement, the criminal complaint said.

A woman then told police that her son, identified as King, was suicidal and “walking around.” She said King was having problems with drug use and trying to harm himself. King’s mother told police that he had been diagnosed with bipolar disorder, schizoaffective disorder and substance abuse.

Officers then found a live 9mm round of ammunition and a spent casing in front of the side door of the home. They saw a bullet hole in the door and that it had been kicked in, court documents said.

Officers went into the home and were able to arrest King. They found a 9 mm handgun on the ground next to King. The gun’s chamber and magazine were empty, according to the criminal complaint.

Two people were inside the home when King was arrested.

Later that morning, officers were called to a home on the 1100 block of White Bear Avenue, about four or five houses away from the break-in, on a report of a man unconscious and not breathing.

Officers responded and found the man suffering from a possible gunshot wound, and medics pronounced him dead at the scene.

St. Paul Police Sgt. Mike Ernster said the man’s death was ruled a homicide on Thursday after his death was connected to the break-in. However, Ernster wasn’t able to publicly reveal what connected the two incidents Thursday.

Ernster says it’s the 17th homicide of the year in St. Paul.

The victim’s identity will be released publicly at a later time.
