Teen pleads guilty to charge stemming from fatal shooting at light rail platform

Court records show a St. Paul teen who was charged with second-degree intentional murder has entered a guilty plea.
As previously reported, Tashawn Powell was charged in the death of 15-year-old Fred Ulysses Walker, who was shot at the Nicollet Mall light rail station, located near South Fifth Street, in early August.

According to court records, the plea was made during an omnibus hearing held Tuesday morning. A sentencing hearing has been scheduled for the afternoon of Jan. 23, 2023.
Powell was 17 at the time charges were filed, and prosecutors had moved to have him certified as an adult.
According to a juvenile petition, police watched Metro Transit video footage, and heard from a bus driver that a person matching Powell’s description was spotted. Police eventually arrested Powell, and officers found a handgun that matched the caliber of the discharged casing found near Walker’s body. The petition adds that Powell later admitted to shooting the victim.
