Police say a teen is dead following a shooting Tuesday evening on a light rail platform in downtown Minneapolis.

According to Minneapolis Police Department spokesman Howie Padilla, officers responded to a reported shooting near the intersection of South Fifth Street and Nicollet Avenue around 5:30 p.m. Officers attempted to revive the teenage victim, but he was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police shared a description of a person of interest with local law enforcement and transit operators. Shortly after, a bus driver reported someone who matched the person’s description to Metro Transit, and University of Minnesota police officers arrived to arrest the person of interest, Padilla said.

Investigators believe the person of interest knew the shooting victim, who will be identified at a later date.

Police say this is the 53rd homicide in Minneapolis this year.
