Minneapolis man acquitted of murder charge due to mental illness
A man who was charged with murder after his father was found dead following an assault earlier this year has been acquitted, court records show.
According to court documents, 34-year-old Anthony Jolson was acquitted earlier this month by reason of mental illness for one count of second-degree intentional murder.
The verdict reads Jolson’s “current commitment status is appropriate” and another petition for commitment “is not warranted at this time.” Jolson was previously scheduled to have a hearing on Dec. 20.

As previously reported, prosecutors alleged Jolson assaulted his 58-year-old father, Donald Jolson, in the area of Elliot Avenue South and East 47th Street around 9 p.m. on Friday, January 14, 2022. When police arrived at the scene, they found a man who had died and arrested Jolson.
Authorities alleged Anthony Jolson hit his father in the head with a hammer and also stabbed him.
A criminal complaint stated Jolson had specks of blood on his forehead and told his brother, “it’s my nightmare” and “I did something really bad.” Jolson also told his brother he had “sneak” attacked their father, claiming “the devil made me do it.”
