Sen. Amy Klobuchar presses further investigation into Ticketmaster ‘monopoly’

Sen. Amy Klobuchar is speaking out against Ticketmaster in the wake of its mishandling of Taylor Swift ticket sales.

Klobuchar, who chairs an anti-trust subcommittee, says her concerns with Ticketmaster go back years.

“Ticketmaster is a monopoly,” Klobuchar told KSTP in an interview Saturday.

“It has vast majorities of the market and it affects things in many ways. Number one, they can charge what they want, they can put hidden fees, there’s no competitor to actually go to for something as big as a concert like this.”

Klobuchar also raised concerns that Ticketmaster is now buying music venues.

The Minnesota senator is one of many lawmakers nationwide who are accusing Ticketmaster of abusing its power.

The Associated Press reports several attorneys general have launched investigations into last week’s site breakdown, and Klobuchar wrote an open letter to Ticketmaster’s President and CEO Michael Rapino with a call for him to respond by next week.

The recent trouble with the company began when registered fans given codes for a pre-sale on Tuesday were hit by delays and error messages as they tried to secure tickets for Swift’s upcoming tour. The company then canceled Friday’s sales to the general public and apologized to Swift and her fans.
