Minneapolis Commissioner of Community Safety Cedric Alexander said he regrets “the tone of my responses” in a series of contentious exchanges on Twitter Thursday evening.

Alexander was responding in part to some criticism of the recently announced “Operation Endeavor” plan by Minneapolis officials, as part of a broader crackdown on violent crime in the city. That plan was announced two weeks ago.

Alexander issued a statement addressing the exchanges on Friday:

The way I engaged with constituents last night on Twitter did not meet the standards I hold for myself and the Office of Community Safety team. I care deeply about the success of our community safety work in Minneapolis, and I know building trust happens one interaction at a time. I regret the tone of my responses, and I’m committed to respectful, constructive engagement with the communities we serve.

Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey said he spoke with Alexander Thursday evening. In a statement, Frey said, “I appreciate his prompt response today to the community and members of the media.”
