Minneapolis City Council discusses police retention, chief nominee at Thursday meeting

The Minneapolis City Council met Thursday, and multiple big items were on the agenda.
According to the agenda, the council formally received Mayor Jacob Frey’s nomination for the city’s police chief, Brian O’Hara.
They then referred the nomination to a committee for a public hearing. O’Hara beat out fellow finalists RaShall Brackney and Elvin Barren for the position.
Next, the councilors discussed a $6,000 retention package for police department employees.

Part of the incentive package would increase vacation, allowing employees to exceed the maximum 400 hours of accrued vacation through the end of next year.
In addition to those items, the council is set to appoint Mayor Frey’s nomination of Barret Lane to Director of Emergency Management for a four-year term.
