Sometimes a simple walk around the block can become a meaningful journey.
“He loves to move. He does not like sitting in his chair,” said Tiffany Goodchild, mother of 6-year-old Karter Goodchild from Hugo, Minnesota.
Karter was born with a brain injury and has severe cerebral palsy. His at-home walking device has made a significant difference in his life.
The device is the Trexo Robotics Gait Training Home System, but Karter and his family affectionately call it his “robot legs.” He was one of the first patients in Minnesota to have one at home, and it changed his life.
“When you see a child who can’t walk… to see him taking steps side by side with his peers… It’s powerful. It’s invaluable to us,” his mom said.
“There are a lot of health benefits. Bodies are made to move. He has better head control and trunk control,” she said.
Now Karter and his family are hoping to help other kids keep moving.
Their foundation is hosting the Race for Robot Legs on Sept. 24.
A lease for an at-home walking device is about $12,000 a year. They hope to raise enough for two to three families to try the device.
