BCA identifies deputies who fired weapons in fatal Otsego shooting

The officers who fired their weapons during a fatal encounter with a man in Otsego on Sunday have been identified.

Wednesday, the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension said the following Wright County Sheriff’s Office personnel were involved:

• Deputy Patrick Mabusth, a five-year veteran of the department, fired his Taser.
• Deputy Mark Voss, a three-year veteran of the department, fired his Taser.
• Sgt. Jeffrey McMackins, a 13-year veteran of the department, fired his handgun.
• Deputy Leland Wilkinson, a two-month veteran of the department, fired his handgun.

The man they shot was previously identified by family members and the medical examiner as 21-year-old Jordyn John Hansen. He died from gunshot wounds to the chest.

Family members say Hansen was having a mental health crisis early Sunday morning when they called 911. The BCA says the four deputies listed above weren’t part of the initial response to the home in Otsego but responded after Hansen got a knife and ran from the home.

The BCA says video captured by squad car cameras — which hasn’t been publicly released at this time — shows Hansen run toward Wilkinson at one point and Wilkinson then fell backward as he fired his gun at Hansen. McMackins and Voss were then seen on the video providing aid to Hansen.

The deputies didn’t wear body cameras. The BCA says the squad videos will be released after the investigation has been completed.

The sheriff’s office said Hansen ignored repeated commands to drop the knife, which was recovered by the BCA at the scene. Family members questioned why law enforcement allowed Hansen to go into the kitchen and grab a knife in the first place.

After the BCA’s investigation is complete, it will present the findings to the Wright County Attorney’s Office for review and potential charges.
