DNR confirms zebra mussels in Wright County lake
State officials have confirmed the presence of zebra mussels in a Wright County lake.
The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources (DNR) says divers found a live adult zebra mussel in Lake Pulaski after a business reported finding a dead zebra mussel on equipment at the lake.
The DNR says it will work with the lake improvement district on next steps but also reminded boaters and lake property owners to always check boats, trailers, docks, boat lifts and all other water equipment for invasive species.
Minnesota law requires boaters and anglers to always clean watercraft and trailers of aquatic plants and invasive species, drain all water and keep drain plugs out during transport, and dispose of unwanted bait in the trash.
Additionally, the DNR noted that some invasive species are small and difficult to see. To remove them, officials recommend spraying with high-pressure water, rinsing with very hot water and drying for at least five days.
According to the DNR, zebra mussels compete with native species for food and habitat, and can also cut swimmers’ feet, reduce the performance of boat motors, and cause expensive damage to water intake pipes.
