Sen. Ruud announces legislative retirement at the end of 2022 term

Another Minnesota politician has announced retirement from the state legislature following the end of this term.

Monday morning, Sen. Carrie Ruud (R-Breezy Point), announced she won’t be running for reelection in 2022.

Ruud, who was first elected in 2002, has served on multiple committees and commissions, and was also a president for the National Foundation of Women Legislators.

Ruud issued the following prepared statement for her announcement:

“It has been one of the great honors of my life to serve Aitkin and Crow Wing Counties in the Minnesota Senate. I am grateful to my constituents for placing their trust and faith in me. I believe I have served with honesty and integrity. I want to thank my family, friends and all those who have so kindly supported me during my time in the Senate. My next plans, besides some vacation and time with those near and dear to me, are unclear. I will approach that future with a servant’s heart, faith in God and gratitude for all the opportunities and experiences.”

Ruud is the latest lawmaker at the state level to announce they won’t be running for reelection.

So far, 32 lawmakers – 16 House members and 18 Senators – have announced they plan to retire at the end of the 2021-2022 biennium. Of the House members, seven are Republicans and nine are DFL members. Meanwhile, there are seven Senate DFL members retiring, while nine are Republican and two are Independent.
