Twins get pitcher Medina from Padres to finalize Rogers trade

The Minnesota Twins’ April 6 trade with the San Diego Padres is now complete.

Thursday, the Twins announced the acquisition of minor league pitcher Brayan Medina.

The trade sent Twins relief pitcher Taylor Rogers and outfielder Brent Rooker to the Padres for starting pitcher Chris Paddack, relief pitcher Emilio Pagan, cash and a player to be named later — Medina.

Medina was ranked by MLB.com as San Diego’s No. 14 prospect.

The 19-year-old right-hander was the top Venezuelan pitching prospect in the 2019-20 international class, MLB.com says. However, due to the pandemic-canceled 2020 minor league season, Medina didn’t make his professional debut until last year, throwing 33.2 innings.

MLB.com rates Medina’s fastball and slider as above-average, with the fastball currently hitting the mid- to upper-90s, and calls his changeup “promising.” While he’s still several years away from reaching the majors, MLB.com says Medina projects as a starter as long as he hones his command.
