Officers said they first received a 911 call at about 5:45 p.m. reporting a possible hit-and-run crash with a man lying in the middle of the street near Flandrau Street North and Old Hudson Road, according to an SPPD spokesperson. Another 911 caller said the man was dumped out of a vehicle before that vehicle was driven away.
When officers arrived, the victim told police he is a rideshare driver who had picked up one or more riders. The passengers then shot him, pushed him out of the car and drove away in his SUV.
He was taken to Regions Hospital and treated for multiple gunshot wounds. Shortly before 8 p.m., police said the victim was out of surgery and remains in critical condition after surgery, but is expected to survive.
No one is in custody.
An SPPD spokesperson said this information is preliminary and an investigation is underway.
